should i try out saltwater

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I kept a 55 gallon marine for a couple years. Total freshwater set up with 2 hang ons, no sump. Mattybecks nailed it with less or equal maintenance if you have live rock and sand. Long horn cow fish is my all time favorite, from juvenile to mature they totally change shape and color.

Saltwater can be as expensive or cheap as you want to make it. Buy top of the line equipment and it’s easy to hit thousands to 10s of thousands of dollars. Buy used, cheaper equipment and you can get a solid setup for just a few hundred.

Saltwater is very rewarding. Fish have a ton of personality and unbelievable colours. Watching corals grow and flourish or wither and die is all part of the game.

I was hoping I could turn my 160L tank in SW and have a marine setup once if I get my 2nd larger tank.
This post makes that sound more promising for me, appreciated.
Glad I could help!! Feel free to ask me any questions you may have if you are unsure, I am still new and by no means an expert, but at least have some experinece.
When someone said something similar to me it helped give me a little a push towards it. I am so glad I did it, don't know why it took me so long.
I keep my 750L tank as freshwater, small 40L as planted and my 150L as Marine. Its nice to have different set ups to look at.

Start off simple so as not to put yourself off and to keep things easy if you are still unsure.
Fish only, if live rock (or "dead" rock too as long as it is porous) is possible I would highly recommend that for filtartion purposes.

This is literally all I did. All my live rock was dried and so dead when I got it, but it colonizes fast enough. Even though I don't have corals, I find the algae which just naturally grows anyway provides some amazing colours. Greens, purples and oranges. Its not only corals that make marine beautiful.

I am lucky enough to live by the beach so after a while I gathered some macro algae's and the amazing array of stuff that comes on them (they dont always know about until weeks later).
here are some pics from last night, you can see the coraline algaes (purple) and different shades of greens (sorry not clear in photo).
