Should I Start An Ant Colony?

As I suggested in your other thread, go for it, but avoid any wood species. The one you've named is a carpenter ant, and will be able to cause structural damage to your home. Try Lasius or Myrmica first.

Myrmicologists advise against importing species, if you want to try it maybe wait until the nuptial flights and nab yourself a queen or two. I know waiting this long will try your patience, but these animals require a lot of that anyway, you will not grow a supercolony in a few months, so just keep in mind the timescale involved :)

Oh there are definitely laws governing inverts. Here in the US you basically have to email the USDA to find out what they are.
