Why would you assume that people who are offended by a racial slur are looking for trouble to stir up?

Matt

I'm not assuming that at all. But there are always individuals in any group who take it to extremes and will find anything to be offended or upset by, usually as a power trip or a need for validation.

So anyone who takes offense at a slur against their ethnicity is probably on a power trip or needs validation.

Not sure how familiar you are with the history and status of Native Americans in America, but changing the name of a football team to something less offensive seems like the least that could be done...

The positive behind changing name is too many people would whine about it being gone. Then they would create another team named Redskins.

I Personally say no. I believe that if it gets changed it would be admitting it was intended as a racial slur which I believe it never was.

Next the Dallas Cowboys will have to change their name as it supposely offended someone

Comprehension not your strong suit I see. At no point did I say that anyone offended is on a trip. You however seem to be one of those who just needs to find something to be offended about.

Uh, other than you: "But there are always individuals in any group who take it to extremes and will find anything to be offended or upset by, usually as a power trip or a need for validation."

I'm not personally offended by the name. I'm, of course, not Native American.

I can understand, though, why someone who is Native American would be offended...or find the term "Redskin" offensive.

Terms that at one point in our history weren't offensive now are: http://theboxhouston.com/9179052/congressman-don-young-wetbacks-comment/

Time to change it...

Hail to the "Generic non-offensive moniker" it has a ring to it.......... although the phrase non-offensive might be offensive to football fans, just can't get a break..............

Matt I got to get you a bigger stick so you can whack the hornets nest harder...................;)

This whole deal kind of reminds me of a local sandwich shop that has had a somewhat contraversal name for the many or has been in business...The store was called Chinks Steaks, named after the original owners nickname.Thats been the name of the place for decades but recently there has been pressure from some groups for the current owner to change the name to something a little more PC.

Yet you are still unable to comprehend the first statement. Is it a widespread issue or just a few? Do we remove anything that any single person finds offensive? Just bury our heads in the sand and pretend it didn't happen. If you're not familiar with finge elements of a group causing trouble then you're not keeping up with current affairs. Maybe we should go through all sports teams and change any that are offensive to any group or even individual.

the obvious comparison is what if the team was called the blackskins? would you still say it's just a couple over sensitive black people being PC so we shouldn't change it?

Offending almost an entire race is a little different than offending a few people. I have never heard a single person offended by the Cowboys name, or any other NFL team name for that matter.

They should not be forced to change the name, but they should out of respect and understanding, it is the 21st century.
