Should the Washington Redskins change their team name?

The only people they should poll to change the name are Native Americans living in the DC area. It shouldn't matter to anyone else frankly imo.

Most of these changes are started by privileged white folks feeling guilt over what was done to the various minorities. The Seminole example listed above was a great example. Some uppity white college folks thought having a college team named after a local tribe that was mistreated was offensive, and tried to change it. I laughed hard when the Tribe came out and said no, don't change it.

Yes, this is different since it was a racial slur (haven't heard it used as such in a long time, but I'm out west where it was never as prevalent), but that's why I said the only ones that should get a vote are those whom it might be addressed to. Frankly I don't care if white people find it offensive. Or someone across the country from the team.

The local NA people might have decided to 'own' it decades ago, the way some black people do the n-word or Irish do with mick. Who am I to tell them they have to stop? I'm on the opposite coast and am only 1/4 NA, so frankly I have no say in it.

It seems like a racial slur to me, but I am not Native American.

According to this article, only 9% of Native Americans believe it is a slur. If only 10% of the population is offended, it doesn't seem like enough to change. But at what point does it become offensive to enough people to do something, 50%?

It took only one person to inform me that calling a person oriental is offensive. I haven't done it since, even if others aren't offended by it.

there are so many offensive things going on in the world.Isn't this a petty discussion when there are people starving to death, children being molested, genocide being committed, corruption on a worldwide scale.don't we have more important issues to discuss?Oh,that's right,we're not allowed to talk about anything important here, but fake, irrelevant issues are o.k.

Exactly - much more important things than people being bothered by racial slurs. People just need to see the big picture.

Why would anyone get upset at being called a slur when there's starvation and murder in the world? Jeesh...

It's not like it's a representation of our nations capital or anything. And it's completely unprecedented to change the name of the sports team. Never happened. And when someone tried, the earth's gravitational forces went out of whack for a couple of weeks. Until they relented.

Just speculating, but if you called a native american "chief" or "Indian" to their face I would bet it would be just as offensive as "redskin".

This debate has been going on for quite awhile, seems to pop up every few years. I graduated from a Highschool with the redskins mascot way back in 1985. there was pressure then for the name change. My highschool ended up changing a few years later. I know the issue came up again when the Bullets changed their name. So this is nothing new. Changing the name is not necessary, but would be respectful.

I'm of Norwegian descent, maybe better have a talk with the folks there in Minnesota:irked:

Why don't you ask Jim Thorpe? He was a native american football player that happened to play for-you guessed it-the Redskins. There are lots of natives who support the team, and I find it interesting that non-natives are the ones starting this crap as usual.Whether it be a white guy or a black guy that doesn't like the Redskins team.I'm part native-Cherokee,so step off Eddie. You're just being a tool for a white councilman trying to make a name for himself,or didn't you know what this was really about?

What are you talking about? I use my own brain to decipher situations. Sime native Americans are offended and they make up a tiny portion of the population so YOU think their voices don't matter. You're too stubborn and naive to put yourselves in their shoes. when you grow up and decide to answers the questions on both sides of the debate, I'll listen. Until then, your points are mute

The rest of you that have answered with an open mind ans attempted to answer the questions, I appreciate it

Speaking two parts Native American the name and logo doesn't offend me as it might others there are so many sports teams named after native Americans too. Seminoles , Blackhawks, braves, k.c chiefs and so on I mean in my prospective we natives should be proud the our culture is part of American history and part of American culture today. I mean come on. should actual cowboys be offended by the fact that there is a team called cowboys or steel workers from Pittsburg be offended by the name steelers?

I think the main thing is the fact that they're never getting into DC with that name.

Oh and the fact that Dan Snyder is an idiot

So your way of thinking is that it only takes a very few, maybe only one to say they are offended by something and all should change. Considering how easily some people get offended don't you think that could quickly spiral out of control.

From the statement here it looks like you don't have the open mind. I read it as you have made up your mind on it and anyone who doesn't agree is wrong and has no say on the matter. Correct me on that if I'm wrong but that's how it reads.
