The only people they should poll to change the name are Native Americans living in the DC area. It shouldn't matter to anyone else frankly imo.
Most of these changes are started by privileged white folks feeling guilt over what was done to the various minorities. The Seminole example listed above was a great example. Some uppity white college folks thought having a college team named after a local tribe that was mistreated was offensive, and tried to change it. I laughed hard when the Tribe came out and said no, don't change it.
Yes, this is different since it was a racial slur (haven't heard it used as such in a long time, but I'm out west where it was never as prevalent), but that's why I said the only ones that should get a vote are those whom it might be addressed to. Frankly I don't care if white people find it offensive. Or someone across the country from the team.
The local NA people might have decided to 'own' it decades ago, the way some black people do the n-word or Irish do with mick. Who am I to tell them they have to stop? I'm on the opposite coast and am only 1/4 NA, so frankly I have no say in it.
