shovelnose sturgeon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That's a cool tank. I was just talking about digging a native fossil fish pond after I win the lottery and buy the land to dig it on. What all do you have in your tank?

yes. even though the glass is half empty.

I agree! Although to what I'm not sure lol.

The list of fish is the 135 in the "My tank" tab

I wasn't planning on getting the sturgeon seeing as they are coldwater and need masses of space. But my LFS had a bunch in their 80 degree system, still alive and looking good, as "Warm water sturgeon" So I figured I'd try and raise one...I had it in cold water for awhile, and slowly raised it up. Tank has massive oxygenation from the three filters, which is the key to keeping them in warm water. Once he's big enough it's off to the indoor pond at work.

There's an even smaller genus from Russia, Pseudoscaphirhynchus which I'd love to get my hands on, but they are rather endangered lol. Anyways;

While not being aquacultured as much as the Hybrid or standard Caspian fish, Pseudoscaphirhynchus are now part of the restock program and regularly are being produced. There is actually not a terrible chance of being able to get a hold of these fish legally. Cost would be a bit above what most would pay but it is not impossible.

Like Jimmy Cliff said, "you can get it if you really want..." The real question, on many levels, is "is it worth it?"

As always, thanks for the great info Polypterus.

They are CITES II not I and are legal in the US with appropriate paperwork from the origin nation and import nation. I have personally considered contacting the Aquaculture operations producing these and seeing about this as it would be a good species to attempt Aquaria culture and study with.

Little is known of them really except they are well known for being a pain to keep alive for long and very sensitive to water and oxygen issues.

Thanks. Those HBH sinking pellets and little silversides.

I've actually got one growing up in my "prehistoric" tropical tank as we speak :) Dunno if it's really a Shovelnose, there are a number of Acipenser hybrids floating around on the market. There's an even smaller genus from Russia, Pseudoscaphirhynchus which I'd love to get my hands on, but they are rather endangered lol. Anyways;
