Their scrubbies not Bio Balls, It's a fully submerged Sump. Bio balls need to be exposed to air. scubbies are fine fully submerged.

Think of a HOB Filter. or canister filter, The Sponge where the BB live and all the other media is fully submerged.


Nitrates, Nitrites, Ammonia, Always Zero. I'd say it's working perfectly for a heavily overstocked tank

Not really. Surface area of scrubbies isn't that great. To run submerged you need a lot of suface area, like ceramic media. But hey, if you have zero ammonia and zero nitrites, it must be working!

Flows from right to left. Pvc drip bars drip onto partially exposed media, flow past another foam sponge, through my fuge, (soon to be moving bed area) then down to the pumps.
