What does it take to make a fish show quality? What would a show fish have that the ones in these pics dont? (sorry about the quality of the pics I have to get at a real angle to the glass to avoid getting glare)

Male Jack Dempsey 9.5"
Male Festae 11.5"
Female Jag 7.5" (this pic from last december is the most recent I have of my 11.5" jag RIP)
Female Amphilophus Lyonsi 6" (now 10", I will get a better pic)

Not that I think these are show fish by any means, just wondering what makes the difference.

A show quality fish is when the markings are equally separated and the fins of the fins are in superb condition with remarkable markings. Also it has to have the perfect body shape, not too fat but not skinny. I would say that JD is somewhat show worthy as well as that gorgeous Festae.

who decides how far the marks should be? If that is really how they judge fish that makes me laugh.

I have no idea :) But I love lyonsi!!! :D

A "show quality" fish is one that represents the best of the species. That means it's usually a full grown dominant male, with perfect scales and finnage.

Coloration and marking vary, I wouldn't call them characteristics of a show fish.

The jag is too small (and female), the lyonsi is too small (and female), the jack is too common, and the festae is more what I'd call a show fish. But still not full grown.

Of course, at any fish show you can enter whatever fish you wanted. It doesn't have to be "show quality".

Ya i like that answer :) Something that gives the species CLASS!!

I think the qualifications are: being adult, perfect health condition, being able to show all the characteristics of the species. Show qualiy fish dont have to be spectacular specimens and not every spectacular fish can be called show quality.
