Show quality fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
OK so it sounds like there are no set guidelines other than mature male fish in perfect condition.

I was just wondering because I see fish advertised as having a show quality sire. It seems strange to me that females are not eligible, to me that is like taking the worlds greatest stallion and breeding him to any old nag and advertising the foal as world class. Last time I checked genetics were 50/50.

At any rate I guess offspring from a "show quality" sire should at least have a good chance of inheriting good genes.

BTW I checked out Greenterras gallery out. I love that jag!!! Thanks for the tip.

Thanks, I got all my fish at Big als in Edmonton.

A few years ago I was surfing the net looking at SA fish pics and the Lyonsi caught my eye so I checked at als and sure enough he had 3 in stock 3.5-4" so I picked the one with the brightest white halos around the black lateral line markings (I could not see any other difference in them at that size). I have not seen any Lyonsi for sale anywhere since so it worked out pretty good. I will get some fresh pics as soon as she gets out of the sick tank (bacterial infection) the pic I posted is from 2 or 3 summers ago.

As for the RT, I saw the picture of Rapps wild pair and just had to have one. They had a dozen or so in stock, most of them were about 2" but one was already 3" and had claimed the only peice of driftwood as his own (everything else cowered against the glass!) He seemed to have nice color and aleady had a bit of a nuchal hump forming so I bought him. He is just 1 yr old now (bought him in april) and is already 11.5"! I dont know if that is normal growth for them or not but since he was 1.5x as big as his siblings I hope he becomes an absolute monster!!!

nice fish may not be show quality but they are still great lookin fish none the less

I have seen a show in which 40, maybe 60 Red Devils were lined up in small showcase tanks....There were your thick, golf ball kok males and a couple of slender big lipped males...Slender 9, the thick lipped male, one best of class among the "Godzilla" bowling bowl headed males....It shocked me....But a true red devil speciman will have the thick lips trait...When I say thick, I mean, "Mike Tyson-punched-him-the-face-thick"......

I think thats cool about the red devils. The nuchal hump is alright if its subtle, but its just like breasts, too big and its just freakish.

Some nice C's will suit me just fine:).

But yes, I think people often confuse show quality fish with just aspects that they like about a fish.

This is a good thread.
