  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My personal opinion is a male jag needs a 180. I've kept a bunch and it takes yrs. However most males achieved 16" even the poorly bred pet shop variety. I think largest caught is 21-22" in Florida on rod and reel. Which is no doubt some random pet store illegal release

If mine grows to that size he will certainly get the 180G he would need at that time; I honestly do not expect him to ever outgrow a 120....but if it is meant to happen then I guess Ive got some rearranging to do. Ive kept many cichlids over the years and have owned some true giants....16" oscar, 14" Midas, etc These fish took many years to achieve their sizes and never started out in their final homes. I upgraded them when it was needed....and provided a good water quality and diet throughout their lives. I don't really expect my Jag to get more than 14" because tt is rare, not out of the realm of possibility of course but I figure he will fall somewhere in the average size range. Fish is an extremely picky eater which I also feel will limit his growth vs one which ate everything in sight. However for the moment he is quite content being a teenage fish in a big enough tank for now....I have massive filtration and do large WCs so his water is pristine.

Do your thing mate, I think it's silly keeping fish in their final tanks from the beginning too.
I've not personally seen one over 14 inch other than the females in the public aquarium...

Think it's rare to see huge jags because most don't get old enough to achieve these sizes.
I do agree that you don't have to house them in huge tanks from the off.

So which active member has the largest jag?
pops pops , how big is yours and what's your opinion.

I think he said 14" last time he posted them. I can already tell mine is going to be a monster, @ 10" and not even 18 months old yet cich78 cich78 has a pretty big Jag too

easy 14, about to 2" larger than his sister when I had to put her down.

no ideal who has the biggest. they reach 16" on the norm as long as well cared for and good genes.

Largest I have seen was maybe 13"ish years ago at a LFS; fish was very bulky and supposedly 8-10 years old. Mine isnt much shorter in length but hasnt developed the bulk yet. I do agree you should prepare for what if they do get extremely large factor; I am just skeptical because I really just have not seen it happen.

I think your Jag is female, btw.
