Shrimp ant farm style tank?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thai micro crabs would make life easier being fully aquatic and freshwater species, vs the fiddler which is brackish and needs a land area...

Also i thought keepung temps cooler might also be a problem since while cherries can survive in up to 25'C tigers prefer cooler temps of around 18'C

Thanks for the info on temperature, I might just go with orange Sakura or blue berry shrimps. If I can find a place that sells red cherries in bulk for cheap than I'll go with them. I'm thinking of using java moss instead of baby tears since they are easy to grow.

The baby shrimp will appreciate the moss as cover thats for sure...

Okay:) this might still be a month or two off but when I start it I'll post pics for sure. I have to build the desk it's going on first. I might put a little lip on the desk to hold the tank. I just saw the post on Thai micro crabs I might include one or two if I can find them cheap. Ill post pics of the blueprint I've drawn up in a while if I can figure out how to do it from my phone. The filter should be pretty kick ass if I can find the right size pump. I'm thinkin a exo terra 200 circulation pump will do the trick. It's sort of like a overflow with a filter inside it. I found a place selling 30 cherries for $34 so unless the lfs can get me a better deal it's looking like they're going to be it. I might throw in a few freshwater clams to filter out the uneaten food and maybe a large bamboo shrimp or amano since there's no issue with hybrids from them and cherries and they would clean the algae better. Thnx for the input everyone! Keep it going its really helping give me ideas. I'll post pics of the build if I can. The lfs has a deal with a glass shop and they'll custom make a tank for you or cheap. I might have them build the back and sides and then I'll put in the filter then attach the front pane myself. So far so good. It might have to be a little smaller to fit under my tv I just found out is going on the wall but it's still looking good. I found a small light fixture for it and I'm really lookin forward to it. I might just start breeding the cherries to feed to my fish in the sw tank:P I'll keep you updated!

I would avoid the freshwater clams personally... Since if they die in the substrate you most likely wont know till its too late...

Plus they really do best in tanks with very bad green water since they filter feed which makes it difficult to feed normally...

Okay I didnt think about that. I will have around 1.5" of substrate. Probably fluval shrimp striatum mixed with some planting sand and growing medium. I might have an otocinclus or two in the tank on algae control since it will be soo wide and thin it will be hard to scrub the glass but I'll have otos, an Amano shrimp and maybe a small magnetic scrubber. Also how many cherry shrimp would you put in a tank that's maybe 24x18x3? I may be able to make it 30 long but I'm not counting on it

I found a sponge filter that would work. Should I go with that or a wet/dry style filter. I'm new to a shrimp specific tank so I don't know what the best filter would be. Before I had my ghost shrimp in with my betta with a submersible power filter.

I've heard many shrimp keepers using Sponge filters and having no problems... although not sure how well they work if its got a lot of stock in there?

One thing is if you use say a canister / hob type filter, make sure you cover the intake tubes with a sponge or some type of cover to prevent the shrimp getting sucked inside and killed by the propeller...

As for how many, i would say start with a mix of a maybe 2/3 males and 6 females and then let them do their thing, as cherry red shrimp are prolific breeders and within a short time should have a good colony going as long as every thing is on par with what they need...

Great Idea man!!
Post some pictures once the tank is ready.
It would be a great motivation to people who are new to this hobby!
Thumbs up!

I personally wouldnt do ottos, nothing works as good as a good scrubbing every now and then, and your shrimp would appreciate the algae on back and side glass...i would custom build a skinny scraper for the front panel, its a small surface so it wouldnt be too ,uch trouble to scrape during wc. Just my 2 cents.....ottos also add to your bioload, and shouldnt be added to a non mature tank imo.
