I bought some shrimp from Publix. Uncooked but peeled... Caught the biggest Mayan I have ever caught....

Thats a 10 1/2 shoe and yes those are dockers. I fish at lunch and a few minutes after work ...

Thanks to Varanio for the shrimp advice ...

I couldnt get any to bite on hot dogs... The panfish steal the dogs right off of the hook... I can catch smaller mayan on nightcrawlers but this is by far the biggest one. I could have had a bigger one but the poor bugger only had one good eye. I actually fed him the rest of the shrimp because I had to get going .... Hes always in the same spot waiting for minnows to swim by ..

Nice catch! Lose the snap swivel, and your catch rate will improve. If you must use a swivel to prevent line twist, use a barrel swivel with a leader to the hook. Tight lines.....

I could take every Mayan I catch.. and Every Tilapia I catch down here and slaughter them and they wouldnt even BEGIN to dent the population... At all. There are places you could catch 100's of these and still wouldnt do anything...

We all catch and release these fish they probably have zero impact on the enviroment they live in man made canals .

If anything they are food for native gar and bass.

The only fish I have ever seen "shove" a native bass was a grass carp by the end of canal that ran into a lake. Grass carp (non natives) were stocked by FWC .

The biggest cichlid is nothing for the native bass but again Florida stocked grass carp which are illegal to keep venture into lakes at will . I am sure they eat bass eggs.

Cichlids probably have zero impact on the natives they are limited to S.Florida and as a whole limited to canals .

Dont be a "cichlid hater" lol I am just kidding but cichlids dont bother natives in lakes, etc
