Is there generally a behavior difference between male and female Dovii? I am not sure which sex mine is.. as here in Australia they dont really know/try to distinguish
My larger one is pushing 6" and even in a tank by himself is still super-shy. I didn't give the tank any gravel or décor, thinking it might lossen him up a bit, but he was actually much more active when I had him w/ other fish and caves from 2"-4" before I moved him since he wouldn't stop fighting w/ my Motaguensisits a 3 inch fish in a new place. Give it time. From what I've seen dovii open up into the aholes nature intended them to be at like 5-6 inches but every fish is different.
What size tank you gonna keep that beast in?
ahhh you are in AUS...you have a bad a gene pool of dovii over there I hear. you may never get a truly aggressive animal from others reporting on their dovii from over there. Is there generally a behavior difference between male and female Dovii? but they are a Saltwater fish even though you can find them in Brackish and river mouth/estuaries....if your in aus and you want something similar to a dovii get a mangrove jack
red snapper. its not a cichlid but similar in personality and high aggression.
not to mention its mean canines and being easier to obtain there aus since
they're native fish. only thing is they get bigger than a dovii but true to the name
"monster" fish in size and attitude and make a nice single wet pet.
My one dovii cost $55 hereAlso agree with Dan518 about getting a few more to make them feel comfortable. Like other cichlids, they tend to watch the others in the group to judge danger. Alone, they are much more vulnerable, and will tend to hide constantly. The last time I picked up dovii, I bought bag of 6 or so for $2 at a club auction, as a shoal, they were not what I considered shy.
