Shy Dovii

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
but they are a Saltwater fish even though you can find them in Brackish and river mouth/estuaries....

there are full fresh ones caught in full fresh land locked areas, so if you
wanted you can keep it full fresh, brackish or full salt. the choice is yours
to make. there also a lot of people keeping them in full fresh and have
been for many many years and i also had mine in full fresh.

Agree with Yuki, a group of dither fish (like mollies, or in your neck of the planet, rainbows) will work well to dispel the dove's shyness. And about the time it gets over its timidity, it will eat the dithers, making its space more tolerable.
At times where I used to live in the U.S. people have a hard time giving dovii away because most aquarists don't have the means or room to house a them correctly.
The only reason I bought the bag of juvie dovii at that auction, was because no one else bid (and the hall broke out laughing sarcastically when I finally did bid). Its the same with haitiensis and many Parachromis, at Milwaukee fish auctions bag of 10 juvies of any of these for under $5 is common.
And even if a bag or 6 or more is bought, it usually gets whittled down to a pair (if your lucky), or one by the time maturity is reached thru attrition.

I bought a 14" male and had it in my 260 wide alone and it done nothing but hide, tried everything and very rarely it would appear then hide again so I moved it on after a couple of months.

Wild caught Dovii? If yes, then it would hide for months before it adapt to home aquarium.
*I bought a 1.5 inch dovii fry not long ago and i kept it with mollies, after few hours its already chase mollies around and after 3 days its already come to front glass when its saw me and wait for me to feed it.
