Agree with Yuki, a group of dither fish (like mollies, or in your neck of the planet, rainbows) will work well to dispel the dove's shyness. And about the time it gets over its timidity, it will eat the dithers, making its space more tolerable.
At times where I used to live in the U.S. people have a hard time giving dovii away because most aquarists don't have the means or room to house a them correctly.
The only reason I bought the bag of juvie dovii at that auction, was because no one else bid (and the hall broke out laughing sarcastically when I finally did bid). Its the same with haitiensis and many Parachromis, at Milwaukee fish auctions bag of 10 juvies of any of these for under $5 is common.
And even if a bag or 6 or more is bought, it usually gets whittled down to a pair (if your lucky), or one by the time maturity is reached thru attrition.
