Shy Oscars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You are being quite rude and snappy for somebody who asked for help and is being given great advice by people who are veterans in fish keeping.

You had no heater or thermometer so the unsuitable temperature isn't a surprise, this may have been having the largest impact on your Oscars behaviour.
You need to regularly check your water parameters, including ammonia, nitrites and nitrates and keep them as low as possible, Oscars are very messy fish. You will also need to make sure you have adequate filtration, nitrites and ammonia should be 0.
Your tank size isn't appropriate for the fish you are keeping, you will soon need to upgrade, Oscars are very fast growing.

I suggest in the future that you research and understand the needs of a pet before you decide to keep it.

I have been thinking about getting rid of them for a while now, I have known the tank was to small for the long run. I researched for about a week before ever even thinking about getting them. I thought my tank was larger because the person that gave it to me said she didn't know. If I try to get rid of them my mom will likely say no, and I will have to look for a cheap larger tank, hopefully not so cheap since my birthday is coming up soon. To seaofdreams, I have gotten a thermometer and have been keeping the temperature around 80F, I'm not getting "snappy" at anyone who was being helpful, only people who restated things that were earlier resolved.

If I do happen to get rid of the fish I will be looking into Green Terrors, JDs, Senegals, possibly piranhas.

My tape measurer was very incorrect. My mom and me just re-measured my tank and it is 71 gallons.

That's convenient...

Could you give us the dimensions?

He said the temp was below 72 degree at one point?? thats probably the problem right now. I know you dont need to be told again because Im sure that now youve read and understand the basic aspects of an oscar set up.

As your oscars get older and grow larger, consistent water changes and hopefuly one day a tank upgrade, will ensure healthy full grown fish. Dont do the above and youll have problems! Simple as that really, which is pretty simple...good luck!

This is just classic. I sense untruths. You should've quit while you were ahead, you're just digging yourself deeper now. The proof of maturity is knowing when to shut your mouth and sit in the corner. lol
Sorry, mods, couldn't resist.

Hence why I said what I said... " That's convenient..." this thread is just getting VERY old.

anyhow i will get the measurements again and post them

Also, you never answered me when I asked how much water do you change each week.
