sick black aro...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I recently went threw something similar with my 10" Silver Arowana. He bashed his head real hard one night. I heard two good thuds and there was water down the side of the tank.

Just like your aro his appetite was cut in half from 4-5 silversides a night to only 2. He was EXTREMELY skittish swimming fast and laying on the sand if you even got remotely close to the tank. He laid around a lot.. swam at a slow pace. He never refused to eat but he would only eat when I walked away from the tank which he didn't do prior to the inccident. I didn't do any additional water changes during his recovery just added salt/stress when I did my weekly WC.I lowered the water level about 4 inches to give him room to jump if needed.

Took about 9 days for him to get back to normal. Since then I added some blue LEDs to the tank for a night light, I haven't heard him jump once since I added them. He's currently fully recovered, I'm back to hand feeding him. I've also added a lot of fish since the incident and they haven't spooked him yet with the LED lights in there.

Just be patient, I thought mine wasn't going to recover but he did :)

First: Don't change water all the time.
Second: Keep the temperature at 79*~83*
Third: The HP gotta be at 7.0 or 7.5. hp? Arowanas actually do better in low pH (6.0+), but pH doesn't really matter as long as it's stable
Fourth: Arowanas hate Air Bubbles! Also a lie...
Fifth: At night please turn off the light because they need to ""SLEEP"" The light just make them Tired.
Sixth: Don't fed to many Comets or any life food to arowanas because the life food bring a lot of bacterias. Not bacteria directly, no more than a tank mate would, they just bring diseases/parasites.
Seventh: They need to have tank mates. LOL, where did you hear this? If anything they do better w/o tankmates to spook them.

This is all the information I got . I been raising the arowanas for 15 years

Replies in red, and IMO, your name says it all. :screwy::ROFL:

For some reason during the night when lights are off and its pitch black it seems to just freak out. So i wake up and look to see whats going on and just see it breathing alittle faster. I'm like WTF nothing in the tank with um and no flashing lights to freak it what could be making it do that?

I suggest you get a night light and then see if he continues this. I was having a similar issue with my Aro because his Knifefish tank mate would sneak up on him from behind and spook him. I realize your Aro is alone but a simple nightlight is worth a shot
