Sick Discus Juvies

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
See, search and you shall find. Good page too I'm bookmarking that one. I like reading all I can about fish maladies. Bloat/dropsey are tough sometimes because it's a symptom not really a disease itself. Methylene blue and Kanamycin are useful treatments in most instances. You have to learn how to post pictures.

Thank you sir, do you think I should treat according, or hang on until I'm a 100% sure?

sorry to hear! if it was bloat then the epsom salt would of helped! Im not the one to speak on Discus Anatomy but with out disecting and scoping you want know what it is. I still wouldn't rule out flagellates infection.

Thanks whale, I think I am going to wait and see. Everyone seems great now, but I'm watching a couple of them. Microscopes are as cheap as $20 @ Walmart or Target. Ill compare those at least. I remember seeing the National Geographic one at Target during Christmas, hopefully I can come home with something useful. I'll look into flagellates also.

Lol, is there a nurse in the house!?:D There has to be somewhere to buy a microscope somewhere in between $20-$200?

Walmart actually has a few different microscopes available, you just have to order from the online store,

After re reading this from the beginning it's possible it may have been affected with Hexamita. Hex and flagellates both show the same signs bloating, slimy poop and lonely hanging by itself... only difference is with flag is discus will turn dark. Which you stated it wasn't. plus side is they both can be treated with metro! HTH

The problem is that u are doing way tooooo much. Add more filtration and air. Keep the temp at 84 85 , thats it. Add some salt so u get a specific gravity of around 1.004 ot so. That is with a hydrometer. Parasites take a good hit to get rid of them. Do water changes at least once every 2 or 3 days. U can use ro water or tap, just make sure its consistent. It really should be more towards, the 7.0 line so the young fish benefits from the minerals in the water and make sure they are all the same size. Even a fish thats and inch or so bigget immits a hormone that will stunt the sm ones. Look it up if u dont believe me. Forget live food, use frozen so no parasites or bacterial infection happen. Discus need great water, consistent parameters and clean sterile food. Good luck
