I visited one of my big LFS that isn't a chain.
I was looking for an Angel Fish about the size of the bottom of a coke can.

I found some angel fish. Rather large angel fish. I found one that the body was taller then the whole coke can. Of course the price wasn't listed with the other fish in the tank. How much I ask. We'll sell him to you for $30.

$30 for an Angel Fish? Damn.
Well how much is that one? Pointed to one the size I wanted.
We'll give him to you for $25.

For a normal Angel? Are you kidding me?
Thanks, but no thanks.

I kept browsing the store. I found a Polypterus. Maybe 7" long. How much? 59.99. What? This was a very plain polypterus. I may be wrong, but I though they ran in the $30 range.

I passed. Would have bought him for $35 or so.

I then looked at the clown loaches. I'd love to increase the family size for them. $15.99 for the 1". WTF?!

I did end up buying some odd looking fish, banjo cat for $9.99.
When I let this guy out of his bag an hour later (I live right down the street from the store). He went to the bottom of the community tank like a rock would have. I thought he was dead. He stayed in plain open site and let all the fish inspect him (the ones that noticed anyway. He didn't move a muscle.

I don't see him this morning so I guess he's alright.

At the check out I asked about ordering some large aquarium pumps. Yes we can do that. I asked how do your prices compare to online pump prices. I got this BS about I've never shopped online IDK. And as if that wasn't sad enough he went on to barrage me with how I had service if I bought it through them. That if it broke I could bring it in and talk with them. I asked him what good talking to them would be? I'd want it replaced..

Everytime I go in this store I come out pissed or irratated.

I went to pet smart and got 3 Clowns for like $8.99. They were 1" - 1.5". I also bought 3 Rosy Barbs for $2.99.

I feel your pain. Everyone says to "support your LFS", not the way they do business around here I won't. If you buy fish at PetsMart or Petco there's central filtration systems, water parameters are normally at least within an acceptable range give or take. The LFS's around here....? I test their water every time I've bought a fish over the years and there's always ammonia, always nitrites and nitrates have never once been under 100 ppm, normally far closer to 180 ppm. I have to cut it with my '0' nitrate tap water to even test it. Their prices are outrageous and the majority get their fish from the same exact local fish wholesaler as PetsMart, WalMart and Petco. Support my local LFS? No thanks. I've had excellent luck so far ordering online. It costs more but I'm in this for fish health and longevity so to me it's money well spent.

The only thing about testing the water from your lfs is that if you tested the water that was in the bag with the fsh, the results wil be skewed. Im not sure if they will be that high though!

I thought of that, too, but they spend less than 30 min in the bag on the way home. I just don't have much faith in LFS's. If I could actually find one that kept them in healthy conditions and knew about the fish they sold I *would support them. But as it stands....no such luck.

MY LFS wants 25 for angles or 40 for a pair. Boo LFS prices.

its a hit or miss, some of my places have really great prices and others, not so much.
