Sick LFS prices

If there were no online community for fishkeepers, I honestly don't think that I would've found my way back into the hobby.

The internet has given us access to vendors, breeders and hobbyists whose livestock quality is consistently excellent. I feel like now, finally, I can concentrate on paying (or trading) for great quality vs. the "buy 'em all & let God sort 'em out" approach that I had come to believe was the norm.

As far as LFSs go, I only consistently buy livestock from 2 places. Probably 85% of my current collection has come from members or vendors on this site.

I feel that over the years, I've gone out of my way to search out and support good LFSs. I'm afraid I've been let down more often than not. Hopefully there will be 1 or 2 more gems that I can feel good about buying from.

my LFS is a joke. they have no clue what any of the fish they have are. they go by the "if its pretty, its expensive". a couple years back i went there and notices a tiny silver aro(mabey 2") in one of the community tanks so i asked how much the fish was and they sold it to me for $ .99 because it was a "sickly gurami" lol. i sold it to a kid i know(another fish addict) for $50 the same day.

Every thing is expensive now anyways. Blood Parrots, Snooks, Angelfish, all not worth 30.00$ It's just the store trying to make extra money. They are only worth like 4.00$. Even Convicts cost 3.00$, So do Firemouths, and Green Terrors cost like 6.00$

In Blighty, our LFS's are pretty reasonable. I understand the overheads involved, and the possible, thin profit margin, but still, the prices are reasonable at all of my local stores, at least for live stock.

Only thing that lets them down is the price of hardware.

My tuppence.

I do 99% of my buying online because of the fish stores around here. However I do frequent the stores to just look through for any mixups. For example yesterday I went in one and and saw some juvie Red Bay Snooks in a tank. They actually looked pretty sharp. I looked at the tank and they were marked Red Devils on sale for 3.49. So I politely asked them for 5 of the red devils and took my 3.49 snooks home. I could have said something to them I guess, but they would have just thought I was some idiot and not thought the second thing about it. Oh well 3.49 snooks for me :)

My LFS has GREAT prices. They even sell Cardinal tetras for just 95cents each! Some good scores include a 12" B. Jurense for $60 and a 12" ornate bichir for $20. At another LFS I purchased a 12" NTT for $30!!!!

Their clown loaches are crazy expensive at $30 for 2" fish which makes no sense.

One near me, $25 for a 3-4 inch GT, $45 for a 4 inch red shoulder severum and $100 for a 6 inch aro.

The LFS I work at has those sized angels 2 for $8 with three color choices including veil tail... My old LFS would order me anything I want for $2-5 dollars over cost depending on what it was. I got awesome deals. Seems like an endless debate between LFS's and Chain stores, just go with what works for you I guess.
