Sick yellow lab

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well maybe more like 1/2-3/4 of a millimeter.

He only has 2 red spots left and seems to be acting more normal.

Hello everyone
The yellow lab I was talking about earlier has gotten better and is almost back to normal.
However another one of my yellow labs now has a sunken belly (she was holding fry a month ago so for 3 weeks so she had no food, I am not sure if that has anything to do with it) and she has some tattered fins. Her tail fin has good chunk of fin missing <*((((>< this fin

I moved her into a 5 gallon bucket with filter/heater. Can I treat the damaged fins with table salt or Epsom salt? If so how much do I put in her 5 gallon bucket

Thanks

Glad to hear your yellow lab is better...the female most likely has a sunken belly because of not eating for 3 weeks. I would use some aquarium salt or API melafix to heal her damaged fins. For aquarium salt, use 1 tsp per 5 gallons

Thanks I used some canning & pickling salt that has no additives (I researched it and apparently it's just as good as aquarium salt) How long should I leave her in the hospital tank for?
Also I forgot to mention that she seems to be "weak" or slow. Is this from her damaged fins?

I would leave her in the hospital tank until her fins are healed and shes in good health. She might seem weak or slow because shes stressed from going into a whole new tank or shes just getting use to the hospital tank.

okay thanks

Also I could put her in a ten gallon tank that I was about to put my fry in but I needed to borrow the heater for the hospital tank. If by chance she does have some sort of disease (I know she probably doesn't but if she does) and I put her in the ten gallon would that "contaminate" the water?

Glad to hear she is back :D Also I agree with Clown you should leave her in hospital tank for just a wee bit longer to let it come back to full recovery and let any parasites go by by. And yes you could contaminate the water. Also wash your heater really well try and kill all the bacteria. You can use hydrogen peroxide as this can't hurt the fish at all. I would do that to clean the heater because you don't want any chance of the bacteria/parasite spreading. Just use hydrogen peroxide then wash under water and you should be fine :P

I've got good news and bad news

The good news is the female with the damaged fins is getting better

The bad news is the male (one that this thread was originally about) is about as good as dead. He is laying on his side in the bottom of the tank. Hes got red spots all over and some white on his scales.

Is it worth trying to save him or is he good as dead?

Also anyone know what this disease is? I took him out of the tank immediately. The other fish seem fine but is there anything I can do to help prevent the others from getting this?

It looks like the parasite that attaches to the fish and eats all its food which would explain the caved in belly. Did you notice the start of the red spots on his 2 front side fins? I don't know the exact name of it... I am sorry, but he probably is dead. You could try quick cure? or anti parasite medication. Really sorry mate :(
