i just picked up a new 4 inch silver aro and put him in a 20g growout. my gar is just about 12inches now. im thinking he would find the aro as a nice snack but he is in the tank with little 3 inch clown loaches, a 4ish inch pictus and some kissing gouramis. he shows zero aggression towards these fish so what do you guys think? should i let the aro grow alittle bit first?

I wouldn't mix them even if they are the same size. Gars and arowanas generally do not mix, but there are some exceptions.

I would at least wait for the Arrow to get to his size, but in that 20G growout i dont think it will ever reach the gars size considering that the gar is growing as well. You could always try mixing them together and see what happens :)

agree with ryan, not the best combo and the size difference makes it even worse.

offering my views on the comment in bold (which does not indicate my views or opinions of the poster of said comment).

definitely disagree with the bold part of the post. if you were doing it yourself, it would already be irresponsible. advocating others to do so is, imo far worse.

I understand your opinion Xander, but their is a chance it will work out.

Many people say not to mix Africans, and Sa/Ca cichlids. My friend has had a tank like this for 2 years and no problems, each fish is different. At the first sign of agression you could always take him out either way, just keep a close eye.

How many people on this forum don't have monsters with fish they can potentially swallow? Yet somehow it seems to work out.

IMO since you dont have any other tank for the silver i would wait till hes at least 8 inches then put him in the 150, if you dont want to do this then the most responsible thing would be to return him.

i know of more than one person who keeps this combo with no problems. id rather not throw the aro in the 150 now because i dont want to risk losing him. if the gar went after him... itd be a bad day. so i'll just let him grow out

true, however, these are the exceptions to the rule. and when deciding on a combination, it's probably(imo) a better idea to base decisions on the norms rather than the exceptions.

i wouldnt do it cuz more than likely ur gona end up wit a stressed gar that wont eat or a arro that it ate. might as well not get attached to the arro and give it up
