true, however, these are the exceptions to the rule. and when deciding on a combination, it's probably(imo) a better idea to base decisions on the norms rather than the exceptions.

exactly - there are almost always exceptions to the general rule, but when people ask for advice, we generally emphasize the general rule than the exceptions. everyone has a friend who has a friend who has kept some combo that usually doesn't work...that doesn't mean we encourage others to try a combo that works 1/10 times and is hazardous to the fishes, etc. that's not the most responsible fishkeeping advice--

I understand your opinion Xander, but their is a chance it will work out.

Given the current size difference between the two fish, there is zero chance of it working for the next 6-8 months or so.

Once the growth rate of both fish slows down around 15"-18", and the Aro is about 15" with the Gar about 18"..then may be.. MAY BE...it might work, (the odds are against it).

The only "exceptions" to the rule where this combo seems to be working is when the Aro is always significantly larger than the Gars while still not being large enough to try to eat them.

this thread made me lol!!!

i luv how everyone wants to go off exceptions and ignore the sound advice of those of us that know what the hell we are talking about.

aro is gonna be num num'd at the current size, and even when bigger this is a HIGHLY ill-advised combo. with floridas is the sole way it MIGHT work out but is still advised against for a reason.

oh and FYI, just because it works for a few months doesnt mean it will continue to. Just ask Madding....

Looks to me that research was needed before buying the arowana. You don't currently even have a proper sized tank to grow it out to the gars size. I am hoping you realize what size tank this arowana is going to need within 18-24 months.

Better to rely on experience when keeping unlikely combos. Just throwing the fish in a tank and hoping for the best, is just :bs: You will need to be prepared to properly house both fish separately in case things go bad. Though, a large silver freaking out in too small of a tank, likely the gars back will be broken before you could separate them.

.

Silver aros have a rapid growth rate(1"-1.5" average per month) up until the 24-25" mark.

i have a 14" aro with a 12" gar in a 125 with about 8 other fish no problem. my aro seems non aggresive.
....and that tanks too small for either one of those fish

my old combo :naughty::headbang2 ive never had any problems keeping aros with gars. kept my gar with a 17" jardini, kept it with a 20" aro (RIP:() AND kept it with three 6" silver aros. no problems what so ever.
