exactly - there are almost always exceptions to the general rule, but when people ask for advice, we generally emphasize the general rule than the exceptions. everyone has a friend who has a friend who has kept some combo that usually doesn't work...that doesn't mean we encourage others to try a combo that works 1/10 times and is hazardous to the fishes, etc. that's not the most responsible fishkeeping advice--

You will need to be prepared to properly house both fish separately in case things go bad. Though, a large silver freaking out in too small of a tank, likely the gars back will be broken before you could separate them.
ive never had any problems keeping aros with gars. kept my gar with a 17" jardini, kept it with a 20" aro (RIP
