Silver aros in my 135

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i posted here before about the arched back. it's not actually an arched back but a curved spine. people here have said that it's a genetic defect-- i dont mind tho it keeps the fish interesting looking and at the very least i can tell him apart from the other guys.

i have a video of feeding time, two of the three are mellow and one just chomps down the food. it's a lot of fun! Feeding time is one of the reasons i like keeping aros :D

i agree i love feeding my two silvers they have such big bellys its fun to see how much food they can stuff

Tank looks nice, I think the live plants look great with aros and to me they don't take up much of the swimming space. That said, IMO you should be planning for an upgrade in the near future, if you wait til you get a house and build a big indoor pond you're gonna run out of room in that 135.

I like the way you have the plant setup nice tank good luck with getting them a bigger tank

Id say 6 months to a year, and its gonna be an all out war in there those are three really big fish for that tank.

Also I'd address that lid issue asap cause next time you might not be so lucky and be awake or around if one tries jumping again.

Good luck bro. Nice silvers.

thanks for the comment guys, lid issue- i have LEARNED! oh man! i have a 7 lb dumbell holding the middle part down and i have a hammer on each side of the tank to hold down the cover.

the house and tank/pond upgrade will happen probably in the next year. i know i'm pushing it and i'm trying to rush the process. the continency plan is to get a kiddie pool with pond liner and appropriate filters with a probably a DIY weighed cover.

the arched back was present but not as pronounced when i got them at six inches. i haven't read on the arched back being caused by too little space to turn but i have read that their scales get messed up when they cannot turn properly. as it stands right now i think my dimensions are 72x18x24 (i think) it's not quite to the point where they have to strain when they turn.

thanks for the comment on the plants! i had a variety when i started out the tank but i guess only the hardiest of hardy plants kept from getting uprooted by these guys. now i just am left with the water wisteria in the background, some sort of mystery sword plant to the left, amazon sword plant to the center, and i think the one to the right is a rose sword which has reproduced 3 times. i'm still growing the little sprouts.

The arched back could be caused by the small tank, but if he has had it since very small then probably not. A few years back I adopted a 21-22" silver aro that had been raised in a 48x18" 90g tank to that point. It had a heavily arched back.

After 5-6 months in a 180g 6x2x2' the arch had pretty much disappeared.

Five years later, he is now over 30", you can see him and my other three arowana at the link below. He is the silver that is mostly at the top front of the tank in the video.
