Silver Arowana Longevity?

Howdy all...my first post on this forum..I have a silver I bought @ about 6" when my son was about 1 1/2 years old and have a pic of him in the background of my son's second birthday party. My son will be 13 in Nov. Just wondering if anyone else has one this old or older? Anyone know how long these guys live? He's about 28" now in a 180gal, hopefully moving up to a close to 400 acrylic in the near future. He's been fed on strictly Hikari Bio Gold since I bought him, with the maybe once a month hand feeding of several crayfish, with all the horns and sharp parts cut off...beautiful pink tinges to the edges of his scales...Used to have a 13" male Frontosa, a 16" tiger shovelnose, a 12" Green Terror, and a 10" Malawi Trout as tankmates, but they all passed on years ago and have not had very good luck finding fish big enough to put with him..anyway enough about me...anyone with any oldies?

Nice silver! I don't have a grampy but they can live for up to 20 years or so!

So your aro is about 12years old, nice job on keeping and caring for that silver. Not many people have accomplished what you have done.

I've heard they will live 20 years, but there is some speculation that they will live alot longer then that.

I've been keeping fish for 20+ years, mostly cichlids and large predators. Always overkill on filtration, chemi-pure in the filters, best food i can buy...gotta love hikari..This is the 3rd aro i've had. Had a blue/black when i lived in NY, but had to sell him when we moved to FL, didn't want to take a chance of him dying during transport. That was a hard one to leave behind. Once saw a 4 footer in a giant tank in a pet store in Auburn, NY....The tank was right near the front door and the owner would throw crickets in when a customer walked by, usually giving the customer a nice bath...always kept them comming back...very impressive fish....

my hubby, in doing research on arowana when we bought our Pinky, found someone wrote that they live 50+ years. When he told me that i said that our grandkids will have to inherit Pinky when we die.. lol.

good thing my oldest grandson gets as much enjoyment out of my fish as i do..

i have 1 long time ago..
about 9-10 month
from thumb to 2 ft
but he was died in accident..
it was radiation of laser beam..
you know,,they can detect the particle of laser..
it was so sad...until now i still remember that..
but silver can live long enough till your son married.
i mean 20 - 25 years,,if well care maybe they can reach till 30 years...

Good work keeping him alive that long in a tank that size! Im surprised.. Most peoples Aros jump out when they start feeling cramped.

I love the fish, but personally don't feel right keeping them.

IMO, Considering a wild aro would reach 40-48" in a few short years, the lack of swimming space will likely stunt the growth and shorten the lifespan of the fish..

20 years might be considered 'amazing' by fishkeeping standards, but the larger the fish the longer they tend to live.. I would say 50 years is definately possible, especially with good water quality, diet, and tankspace..(or river space)

wow congradulations ..i think u have the oldest silver on MFK ..please post his picture in the thread in this section called who has the oldest or the biggest arow... because i would like to have it documented.. well done for keeping an arow all these years.. your definitly doing everything right.. !!!!
