New York (waiting to move)
ok i'm getting a 6"+ silver arowana. The tank will be a 55 gal. and will be moved up as it grows. My question is what types of food should I use? Freezed Dried krill? I know not to feed them feeders unless it is only once in a blue moon. Are the really as hard as everyone says they are? DO they need to have a low ph? I have a discus tank and they do fine in my 7.6 tap water. Anything will help thanks and please respond anythign you might know about the fish.:cool-1: :perv: :D

make sure u have a top cuz they jump alot... Also Ask the owner of the fs that sold it to u when he last ate... try and get him home with a full stomach so u can starve him for 3 days to get him on the krill or pellets or w/e.... they are very sensitive fish so becareful and good luck

He would be fine in your 55 for only a couple months. The water ph is fine. Feed frozen market prawns with the shell, Beef heart, FD krill would be fine. You should also try to get your aro on pellets like hikari cichlid gold. Feeders are fine ocassionally as long as they are quarentined but goldfish feeders should be avoided because they are high in fat. I would avoid putting the aro with discus because the aro may eat them and discus are expensive. But it could work out.

NOOOOOO!!!!!! BAD IDEA!!!!!!

its extremely stressful to bring the fish home on a full stomach, it is important that fish has an empty stomach when he is being bagged and ready to go home.

and they arent THAT sensitive

my silver ate 20 minutes after introducing her into her new domain

add vitachem to your defrosted food, thaimine is destroyed in the defrosting proccess and your fish need thaimine to grow and function properly.

id say your aro and discus have a good chance of getting along since the fish is at a pretty young age.

Agree.

It's very bad for an arowana or any fish to be netted when they have a full stomach.

It is better to starve them and a day or two ahead, then let their hunger to get them used to the tank quicker.

I know I will probable lose my tetras and krib and coolie loach eventualy but the discus are 4"+ in length and height so i doubt that a 6"+ aro could gulp down the discus. also the fish is going to be fasted before i get him i already talk to the seller. It is a wild one so should i starve it for a couple days then add some pelets? Are bloodworms a good choice for food to because I give that to my discus evey once in a while. I do have a hood and will put waits on the top so it cant jump out. I think i read somewhere that silver aros come from the amazon? thanks for the help and I hope you can offer more when i recieve the fish.

Kevin

nearly every silver comes from the wild

dont starve it just because, offer small amounts of food, for a good starter food try these. Soak them first to soften them up, makes eating easier. See if he will eat afew hours after you introduce him to the tank.

again read the sticky i posted, memorize every word from it

What del said, absolutely don't ship a fish on a full stomach.

And my aro ate 10 minutes, literally 10 minutes out the bag, and that was after being shipped overnight.
