A LFS has what looks like a small 1'' or so silver datnoid for $29.99 being kept in brackish water when i asked a worker there about the gravity of the tanks water he could not get me an answer other then he uses larger handfulls of salt on the Datnoid and scat tanks and smaller handfulls of salt on the puffer tanks i know for past experience that the tank it was in has a gravity of around 1.010 it should still be around the same as its all the same workers just different ones answering my questions this time

So my question is do you think it would be difficult to get it and acclimate it stright to freshwater i ask because i tried this with freshwater puffers bought under simmilur conditions but it didn't go we'll

To acclimate it i would use a drip system for a few hours ? ( how long would you take to acclimate it ? )

i dripped mine into a 55gal that has 2 tbsp of salt per 5gal then over the 4 weeks of quarantine i just added less and less salt at water changes then none on the last one. i dripped it for probably an hour when i moved it. he couldn't be better, completely stable and eats like a horse.

Hmmm i could bring the salt level up in the tank it would go in but right now all my tanks are 100% freshwater so it would have to go from what ever gravity it is in now to full fresh so really i'm asking how tolorent to changes in salinity are datnoids

i had fresh water tank to start with and had to bring the tank up to brackish over a period of time so as not to shock the biological filtration that had already established under fresh water conditions ,,

just to add , my first dat came from the shops brakish tank into my fresh water tank , i was unaware at this time of the brackish needs , the dat was fine by appearance and behavior for a month, then when researching i found that most keep silvers in brakish, so i bought the level up slowly , still low at 003 but want to get to about 010 , the dat is still doing fine with all the other arivals since

^ yeah i was hopeing i won't have to do that

Okay so it did okay going from brackish to freshwater

yes , no probs this side ,,, my brack is still lower than the shops and i have added 12 dats since , i do let some water in the bag a bit at a time and take a good half hour of topping the bag water slowly with water from my tank , but i have asked a few lfs and most have a different idea of brakish salt level ,

they have all gone from bloodworm to broken pellets now so they are happy with what i am doing ,

Thats the main problem every LFS has a different deffinition of what brackish means to some its a few teaspoons of salt per gallon to others its a cup per 5 gallons or more

quarantine it in between brackish and full fresh then drip it too fresh. that's what i was saying i did. probably didn't make sense though. sorry :grinno: mines fine and has been at full fresh for quite some time
