sorry for derailing but i couldnt help to ask. ive been wanting to do brackish water for my datnoid but i also have bichirs and plecos in my tank. i was wondering if they would be ok with the brackish water.
Plecos will not work in brackish water tanks and bichirs are not from brackish water either.

I have an AT in my tank i just add 1tbspoon of salt per 10gal.... but right now im tryng to lessen the salt because i'll be adding a NTT in the tank...

actually for me i guess AT can live in FW or even with just alil salt... at the end of the days its still the fish keepers call. its what ever floats your boat thing... just like in IT... they say change your background to this to that etc... but still they are unstable... so if your AT is happy in full FW then thats good....

check this out...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brackish

check out the table and the value for FW and BW.

cheers

its not a derail

what you are saying is the other way around putting FW fish in a BW tank

what makes me :ROFL:hear is everyone will tell you not to put a FW fish in a BW tank but putting a BW fish in FW seams to be ok makes no sence to me

FW fish in FW
BW fish in BW
SW fish in SW
soft water fish in soft water
hard water fish in hard water

all the above things stated are normal things that fishkeepers should follow

you would not put a dicus in hard alkaline water
you would not put a SW clown fish in FW

So why is it ok to put a BW tiger fish in FW just because thats the only type of tiger you can find :screwy::screwy:

fresh water is a type of brakish water and salt water is a type of brakish water ,,unless someone knows where brakish starts and finishes ,, he he , am i being dificult lol,, i agree with T1KARMANN , but there is a lack of exact info to go with owning a brakish set up,,, my columbian sharks for instance ,, when do i up the salt and at what rate , and what age will they be ready for full marine ,,
how many different answers will that generate ,, if only fish could speak

exactly my point AT are found in FW and BW so by keeping it in FW long term cant be good for them

by keeping it in a BW tank all of its life but at a reduced rate will be better for it long term

when people say they are found in both BW and FW are the adults or fry found in BW or FW

if the adults are found in BW then they may move their as they grow

if the fry is found in BW then the adults may just move to BW to spawn

seams like a lot of hassle to me just hold of buying any tiger until you can find some that are FW

A regular pleco will do fine in brackish water. I dont know about all of the pleco species. Bur mine thrived in it. Until I got tired of it's crap. As soon as I got finished cleaning out the tank, there would be another foot long string of it in the tank bottom and another 6 inches perpetually hanging off of it's backside. Not too cool.

this is the thing that gets me after all i have said about them being a BW fish people still continue to put them in FW long term

would you put a discus in a BW no because thats not the water they need

all tigers can live for many years 15-20

has anyone kept a silver tiger in FW for that long

their is no way of telling the side effects of being kept in FW long term

people shouldnt buy AT just because thats all they can find and they want some kind of tiger bad
You bring up a good point i've just seen and heard of so many silver dats in FW that i thought they do just fine in total FW i've never read any thing that said they need BW to thrive but if it turns out they have to be kept in BW for long term health then i will make the adjustments so that its cared for properly

Also i don't know if the comment at the bottom of this post was dirrected at me but its not the only Dat i can find i just saw a skinny little dat at the front of the tank looking for food like a cichlid and thought he could use a good home thats all

Okay i think i could of answerd my own question and its yes Silver dats can go from BW to FW with out to much trouble because there actuall BW fish unlike the species of puffer i bought there

So now i'm woundering if any one can help me find info on what salinity silver dats like or are there all ready several threads on this issue and its obvious i didn't look very hard
