The dark coloration happens when they're excited -- mostly, as I said, when they're trying to breed, otherwise, I suppose they would "color up" when aggressive. What size tank are these fish in? I'm not familiar with this type of behavior. As I said, I have 10, and I've observed fin-nipping, but that's all. Is it possible the tank is overcrowded, or too small? Otherwise, I guess it is just aggression, and I'm not sure of the cause. So, I'm not sure what you could do about it. Maybe someone else will chime in here.
