Silver Dollars and pothos roots

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So please excuse my ignorance.... I see by your posts that your fish are healthy with pothos. I know for cats and dogs they are poisonous. Has anyone had adverse effects with their fish? I have lots of pothos and cuttings would really be nice in my tank. Have shubunkins and feeder goldfish so I know I would need to protect roots. They are little piggies when it comes to eating plants.

My severums have eaten the roots down to only 1", and they are still alive. I've had pothos in my tank (leaves are out of water) for years with no ill effect on my fish. Sometimes the leaves are floating in the tank, but no one touches them.

I've found that severums and mbuna will eat the roots, but appear to suffer no ill effects.

I've just installed a bunch of pothos shoots into my new 200g setup. I'm not expecting the blood parrots or the giant danios to eat them, and they'll help keep nitrates in check. Their roots also provide a bit of cover at the top of the tank which seems to settle down and reassure skittish fish like the danios.

I made the hanger out of a coat hanger threaded into oxygen tubing. I threaded the hanger into the oxygen tubing. Then I bent it to the desired shape for the hanger.
Next I used seed starter cup and ran the created holder threw the cup. This created the pot and holder. Then I hung on the tank.
Next I placed some small lava rock (pre-treated) and put the plants roots in. The rock will hold them in place until the roots establish themselves more. The lava rock will also promote healthy bacteria.
This has been up on one of my tanks and so far is doing well.
Hope this helps.

I just dropped a piece of Pothos in a week ago and it is doing well. The end of the root may show some signs of nibbleing going on but I’m not sure. But so far the Pothos appears to be doing well and for the most part the silver dollars are leaving the roots alone.A9CED3C7-D91C-4B4D-8C3E-A485EDF95C4C.jpeg 47FE49DB-8FCC-48C2-8C9E-8D8B5056D911.jpeg

SD's don't school any better than angels do with a group of 6. Once they are comfortable, they spread out into their own territories. They only swim close to each other when they feel threatened like sudden movement outside of the tank or during water changes. IME, they make other fish skittish. Once I removed them, none of my cichlids were skittish anymore, and didn't bolt any time there was sudden movement outside of the tank.

I would stick with the angels over SD's anytime.
I would agree in a 6 foot tank, as soon as I moved mine from a 90 qt to the 450 eight foot tank the silver dollars went from spaz to chill.
