Simple Question - Shrimp Safe For Fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I live in FL and just buy Publix raw frozen shrimp. Whatever is on sale at the time. They're just there due to the expiration date.

The less "processing" done to the fresh seafood you feed your fish the better. While the process of "cooking" may not in itself be directly dangerous to your fish, there are many variables to consider.

First and foremost, cooking removes some of the nutriants from the fish or shrimp. With that said, if your fish in one tank eat 1 oz. of uncooked shrimp while the fish in another tank eat the exact same 1 oz. of cooked shrimp:

The tank with the uncooked will get more nutrition per fish. (+ for uncooked)
The tank with the cooked shrimp will actually produce slightly more waste than the tank with the uncooked ones. There is less nutrient to "process" in the fishes metabolism therefore more waste from unprocessed food. (+ for uncooked)

Tiny little factors that are hardly considered all weigh up to basically avoid cooked "processed" fresh seafood for your fish feed. Go with uncooked fresh as a rule of thumb. Obviously, cooked fish/ shrimp will do in a pinch and of course beats the daylights out of allowing your fish to starve to death in the case of fresh uncooked seafood being totally unavailable in your area. Being from a Rural area myself, I do not believe that a place like this exists in the United States of America.

If you are from N. America, that it is a no brainer. DO NOT feed your pet fish cooked seafood, go uncooked fresh!

Alright. Yeah, the shrimp ring I actually got @ publix pomatomus cause that's where we grocery shop. They had generic "publix brand" bags with the picture of the fish or shrimp on the bag. I think I'm going to just grab one of those. Now if I grabbed a shirmp one and they are raw what's the real difference to say cocktail shrimp? I know the cocktail shrimp is cooked and then frozen okay, but would it be "gross" or whatever to eat this frozen raw shrimp like one would the shrimp ring shrimp? (if I get the fish a 12$ bag of shrimp I want some too! lol)

You'd need to cook it...lol...Cooked shrimp is pink, I think that's what make's it"cocktail shrimp" and often times, well mostly all the time these shrimp are de-vained ect..as humans don't want to eat that..Fish on the other hand..don't care as much lol..

It takes 2 mins in some garlic, butter ect in a pan and your good to go..mm mm MMMM:)

Lol, alright see glad I asked. Okay, so I can buy that big bag and they can eat it as is and I can skillet it and eat it? Think I might go buy a bag now before work. :P

Got a big bag of raw shrimp for 11$ at Publix. Okay, it's official. I have a Pbass and Oscar that are afraid of raw shrimp... :screwy:

I usually mush the shrimp between my fingers to make it easier to swallow and digest. Don't worry, your oscar will learn quickly and the Pbass will follow suit.

did you thaw it out? lol
i think your fishes are
on crack if they wont eat
raw shrimp lol my guys
go crazy for them... heck
my turtle snatched a shrimp
from my jar before it likes
it so much.... loll
