That's actually one of the main reasons why I was considering putting a top with a lock on my turtle enclosure. Lucky for me there aren't many kids in my neighborhood (I'm surrounded by retired seniors citizens).

you must be in FL too then....

I have been brainstorming about keeping her outside for the summer, need to figure out how to build something secure in order to keep out the many cats and raccoons that populate the area (suburban neighborhood).

Any other suggestions, if those are impractical?

I have an army of racoons, oppossums and cats that pass through my yard every night and a few clips or cable ties and they can't access your enclosure.

A water trough/stock tank with a screen and clips or cable ties and a family of raccons on steroids can't move it and stop trying.

This is over kill as I use both clips on the corners and cable ties and going to remove the ties (they don't look nice) but I have seen the biggest raccoons try than leave . They simply can't budge it.

Since your turtle is small a Rubber maid 54 gallon bin is great add water floating cork bark, etc soder holes on side so it doesn't fill more than 1/4 full with rains and add screen with clips.

This bin is 2 yrs old and warped as no holes in side it fills up with rains but I just use it so treefrogs breed in it but you get the idea.I added lots plants last today but its fine for small turtles .

however I dont think your turtle could care less if outside or inside as long as you use correct light for him. I keep mine out because its just easier and I drain the trough and use the water for my plants twice a week .
So it works out for me and the turtles but I kept them a month during cold spell inside and they basked the same, swam ,etc I doubt they could care less.
Keep in mind people breed them inside using waterland turtle tubs so inside isn't bad.

Hey krzr, you've seen my box turtle enclosure pics, right? You could make something exactly the same with a pond in the middle. To keep out cats and raccoons you could just make a wire top. I had planned on doing that but I haven't had the need to.

Your enclosure is something I like as wanted to buy a bigger stock tank and do just that bury it than give them land area.

Problem is after an inch or two I hit pure coral rock and since they are still both tiny no hurry but the "digging" in pure rock ESP depth I need to bury stakes deep enough has made me postpone it.

If I had real soil would have done it by now . Its nicely done and practical.

Louie, thanks for the pics and info. Your setup is similar to what i have to put her outside in on the weekends minus the screen top. Racoons aside, i think my biggest concern is kids since it is a busy neighborhood so perhaps its not a good idea at this point. I'll be moving into a house of my own soon, so maybe a permanent pond type setup will be in the works for next summer.

Oh yes if kids around forget it. Plus you don't need the stress of worrying about kids "liberating" your turtle.

I only have 1 neigbor and farms in area plus my house is secluded (high walls lol) but if I had kids around warm weather or not they would be inside .

Again inside is fine many here house them inside and they do great plus you see them more . My map turtle jumps back in the water second I walk near the trough . Water turtles are just that much tamer inside as adapt to you.

Painteds seem sociable . Have you considered getting a second?

I was considering getting another as i see them pop up from time to time on craigslist and local animal rescues. But most likely not until i would be able to move them outside for the summer.

Sometimes I think I am. :grinno:

It's actually good to have them around. At least you know they're always home to watch your house when you're out (unless it's bingo night).

whoever said an mvb is over kill, is well retarded. ur justification is to keep it out side because its safer than an mvb hahaha good one. in a perfect world it would be nice to live in a perfect world where we couild keep our animals in the ideal outside temperatures but for normal people an mvb is safe alot safer than exposing a domestic animal to the elements and predators of the outside world of today. AMEN

^ I'm not sure who you are referring to and I'm not defending anyone here but YOU said it worked great for a BEARDED DRAGON. Last time I checked, they kind of live in entirely different habitats. One is a desert species and the other a temperate one.

Oh, and if you can keep a native species outdoors in a safe habitat I see nothing wrong with that. It has and can be done. ;)
