single cichlid for a 29g?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would start with a female convict. If you dont want to put up with the breeding, get a pleco. When I got my 29g tank I put in a pair of cons and they are great to watch. Very active and interesting. When my male was close to killing my female I added a yellow lab as a quick fix. It did the trick and the 3 fish do very well together. I dont know what I'll do when the lab grows up, however.

You might be able to get away with some fast dithers such as barbs, tetras, or rainbows if you keep the single convict, but definitely not if you get a pair. Maybe try adding a bristlenose pleco as well.

I would make your single convict a pair and get a small african as a dither. People say not to, but it is rare to find a fish fast and tough enough to put up with a pair of convicts tormenting. My cons tore up barbs and tetras.

HRPs are beautiful and have a lot of personality.
I agree, get an HRP! I've never owned one, but IMO they look better then the traditional black convict.

As for adding a dither fish...I had 7 zebra danios in with my 3" female convict in my 29 gallon. Next day 4 were left, day after that 1 was left and then none.

As you can see from my sig, I have a female sal in my 30g (which is, I think, what you have - 36" x 12"?). That's only because she can't get along with anything, however. She also hides most of the time. For me, a pair of hrp or rainbows (especially the orange variant) would be ideal. Very personable and active, and very attractive fish. Or one of each might work as well.
