a 16" JD is absurd to be honest. 12" is extremely rare. but it happens. bigger than that is just not plausible. I think a chocolate is a good choice. They get pretty large and are colorful and peaceful. if you saw "a 16" Jack Dempsey" it must have been another fish or hybrid or something but that is just absurd. lol
speaking the truth, dude im not doubting you but a 16 inch jd is simply unheard of if not super rare lol even 12 inch is pushing it for a jd.........

if anything theres alot of horrible **** flowing around.. 16 inch this, 2 ft that, and 45 ft that.. cmon now.... where are you pulling these numbers from, your ***>?

Thank you to the last few people who posted ... I appreciate it. It's harder for me to be blunt than most people. :D

Hopefully they'll have something real nice next weekend. I'd like to buy a small one and raise it up.

So I will be looking out for a GT, a JD, a Firemouth... Anything that doesn't get too large.

Anyone name something as bold as a GT that stays around the same size?

listen man you shouldnt settle for what we think you should get, if your looking for ideas thats cool, but if you really like something, throw it out there let us determine what we think and you take it from there.... at the end of the day you have to be happy with what your seeing swimming around your tank im just sorry that half the #### foating around this thread are fake numbers.....

its kinda like saying........ "I've seen an 8 ft Mouse from head to tail so you cant get a mouse because they can get 8 ft long" obviously theres wierd stuff i seen a damn 12 inch firemouth once, do they all get that big no not at all so why catergorize them like that....

for the gt question, i would say one of the smaller vieja variety's like a bifa, my female is actually very peaceful(she likes to eat tin-foil barbs lol).
maybe a carpintis maybe........ salvini would be a good choice, would be a little different but i would do sajica or something similar they are really cool

Yikes, what a mess of a thread.

I would do as you said and add some rocks or maybe a large section of driftwood. The tank as is just looks like a glass box which while easy to clean and such just looks so blah. I doubt the Sens care as mine have dozens of hiding places and mostly just swim around the tank constantly or sit out in the open for the most part. They rarely do much hiding however the Cichlid may appreciate the cover.

I'd say anything that says <8-10" as the actual internal depth of a 55g is around 11" if I recall my last one correctly.

I'd suggest a Chocolate Cichlid as well, some sites say they reach 12" but I'd say 8-10" would be more common.

edit: you snuck in your post before me... this was a response to BDM.

True and fair enough...

I am more or less gathering a list of fish that could/should work, and picking the one I like best out of those.

To be honest, I am a completely indecisive person as far as picking out fish goes.

I have 2 options that appeal to me the most:

1. get a larger cichlid, and call it good... It will more or less be a "wet pet".

2. get a few smaller (5-6") cichlids such as firemouths, cons (a bit too mean though, aren't they?) etc...

I like option 1 the most, becuase option 2 makes me worry about aggressive behavior more...

If I didn't have to worry about aggression issues at all, my top choice fish would be a Grammy. I like anything with a guapote type profile really.

I also have to consider that my water is soft with a ph of 6.0 - 6.4.

Well, I was going to do a CYBR-esque type bichir tank, but my resources for them around here don't have any still, and probably won't for a while. So with that out of the question, I know that adding some rocks and/or driftwood would benefit whatever else I decide to put in there.

My tanks internal depth is an even 12".... I still don't think I'm sold on a Chocolate Cichlid yet. Is there anything in particular that's special about them?

The Vieja bifasciatus is something I never thought of... hmmm.

If I could find a nice looking Sajica around here, that would be awesome.

Salvinis have too much bright yellow/orange for my tank I think... It would just look out of place.

Thanks for the suggestions. ;)

Mine was very personable much like an Oscar, it took some time though. The coloring when grown is very sharp looking. They are not really aggressive nor do they have huge mouths so it shouldn't bother the Sens either. They are also insect eaters and will take about anything you can find, it was almost a game. You could catch any sort of bug and he would eat it, once I found a decent sized Spider and put it in. He chomped it down like candy.
