Single cichlid or pair for 55

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok I think I'm going to get 1 male and 2 female at 1.5". Or should I get 3 females. And put my con pair in my 20 once it's cleared out. I'm not going to worry about gravel unless their colours are really dull.

I would go with three. Gives the male plenty of choices when it comes time to choose a mate. And you can easily keep 4 of them in the 55 until they get to 6". Hopefully by then you will have a pair. And it is highly recommended you rehome the other 2 females as soon as you have a pair that lays eggs. Things will be tense in there until the pair have the tank to themselves.

I think at that size they're $3-4 each at Petsmart, so I would say not really, lol.

Petsmart specimens are usually lower quality tho.

Ok so jd or gt my gravel is really white. Should I switch to black?

Pic is from a while ago but same gravel and decor

You should steer away from gravel and go with sand when keeping JD's. They are active diggers and gravel can scratch them. If you have a Tractor Supply Co. nearby you can pick up some Black Diamond blasting sand $8/50lbsuploadfromtaptalk1359624164021.jpg

+1

I would pay more money for a higher quality fish. $25 from a reputable dealer is a good deal. I don't buy any live fish from the big chain stores like Petco and Petsmart since they buy the cheapest fish from the cheapest dealers, which usually leads to low quality fish.

Wish I had known about the blasting sand. I settled for $4/5lb tan gravel when there is a Tractor Supply right down the street from me! Would have looked better too.

Ok I know a breeder that has reg and blue gene jacks. Not sure how big they are I'm guessing 2 inch and the regs are $5 and the blue genes are $10 but they are 3 hours away and charge $20 to deliver to me. Should I stay with breeders near me or go with that?

Isnt blasting sand sharp though? I would be more afraid of them cutting themselves on blasting sand (hence why used for sand blasting) then gravel. I have heard questionable things about using it in aquariums, things like effecting water quality (I believe its just Iron slag) too. Is this true?

There's no iron in it. I just did a magnet test on it to confirm. There's a lot of threads on MFK about Black Diamond. I haven't seen any that show bad first hand results.

Ok cool. I kept coming accross people saying that and had me alarmed about using it. How sharp is it? I was thinking about using it with Salvini, green terrors and possibly an oscar (if I keep him) in the future. I know some times they will dig around in sand and just dont want any fish getting scraped up to much from it is why I ask.
