Single Green Terror ok in a 75g?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The most aggressive GTs that I've every kept...and I've kept and bred many, including wild ones over the years...have been orders of magnitude less aggressive/territorial than your average dovii, red devil, etc.

Matt

Ive found most the saums are less aggo then the A. Stalsbergi. The Stals are quite a bit more agro and really have a better representative of the terror name.

I have bred and raised many aquarium strain GTs, and they have been mellow. Here are pics of my all male GT tank to prove it, all raised together from fry size to 6 to 8 inch in a 75 gal. They co exist with smaller African tankmates, and even an angel fish. There were a lot of ritualistic displays, but no fin ripoff. As long as you don't give them any female to breed, they don't get into serious fight. I can't speak for wild GTs, but my experience with aquarium strain GTs is that they are no more aggressive than severum.

So very true. I have a 11" male that is docile and does not mess with any tanks mates in a 135g . I have a 5 " female that is the ruller of another 120g that has Tri-Macks and some V. Argentenea in it. In adition I have had to move this same small GT from another 120 with RTM's as it was picking on them. Sometimes you never know.

Here are pics of each..

Knew someone 15 plus years ago who had one in a tank with discus and they were getting along just fine. Discus will make it quite clear when they're stressed or unhappy and I've seen discus in other odd combinations where it was more than obvious the discus weren't happy at all. But in this particular tank they were fine. Not saying I'd recommend it, but does show how mellow some GT can be.

I am not trying to imply I doubt your experiences, I am just trying to convey not all are docile. Juveniles tend to be less aggressive, I am intending to convey an fully grown adult perspective. Also I have bred many strains of Green Terror too, but that does not necessarily make it more accurate because your lineage still tends to be limited. Your example is with one lineage transferring their passive traits to the next generation. Also I am not trying to imply they are the most aggressive fish because Dovii almost always certainly have a very mean and intimidating personality.

This is also because the fish are smaller than the Green Terror. In other words the fish are not perceived as a threat or challenge so the Green Terror is more than likely not to care. I have done this too with African cichlids. But oftentimes if you put a equal sized challenger in the aquarium, the peaceful cichlid transforms into a beast.
