im wanting to maybe dab into some salt and get a single inexpensive mantis. i have a 12 gal eclipse sitting around and its time to get it moving again. so would a 12gal glass eclipse work? it has a bio-wheel.

size-wise, your tank is fine. Although mantis shrimp are known for being tank-busters - LITERALLY. I've heard horror stories where mantis shrimp have smahed 1/4" glass.

Im not sure how thick the eclipse is, so its going to be up to you if you think its strong enough.

ive read they will dig and smash the bottom of the tank so could i silicone a piece of acrylic to the inside of the bottom?? and do they need anything specific as far as lighting?

lighting? no not really they do prefer subdued lighting for hunting tho.

i have some acrylic i can use too so im gonna cut it to fit the bottom of the tank. ill use silicone to attach it. would a peacock mantis get to big for a 12 gal? what common species can i house for life??

Peacock will def get way to big for that tank. Ide say thats where the broken tank stories start. Get one of the smaller species say up to 4" and you will be fine and wont have to worry about broken glass.

the cilicata or something like that stay kinda small and look pretty good, imo

Peacock are very beautiful but I think they would need at least a 55gallon or even 80 gallons. See if you can find a small spearer and you wont have to worry as much about the glass.

ok i got the sand, fiji pink, water, and 7lbs of fiji premium LR. im just waiting for it to cycle now. talked to the manager about getting a mantis too. he says he gets them in the LR and just kills them. i told him if he can to save me one but w/e, he just wants to sell me one. are they really as reclusive as he says they are??
