single mantis in a 12gal eclipse

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i just got one and the store owner told me 6"-8" for a peacock mantis. i have mine in a 10 gal. they are way cool and colorful.i throw 1 gold fish in a day. he is very aggresive.

we have had them for years. we feed the ones in the lr subway meat(ham, turkey, roast beef)these things are hardy little bugs. no need to cycle tanks i threw mine in my 10 gal tank with uncycled water and the product cycle as instructed. no problems!!!! everybody has there opinion on what they should do ,my opinion is based on experience, what i have done in the past or present, good or bad.

hmm, i think it'd be commonsense to base an opinion on SOME fact, such as knowing roast beef bits for a mantis shrimp is an inappropriate diet. they may feast on the food, but that doesn't mean it's good for them.

i never said it was good for them . we did this 25 years ago when i was a kid working at a fish store. my collection of exotics will rival the best. and as for FACTS this was written to show how hardy these things are and the abuse they can take. they can live out of water for two days. if there are any other FACTS you would like to know i will gladly share.i feel soory for any pet anywhere that gets the same thing everyday.my 32" red tail catfish will eat everything. doesnt mean i give things that will hurt him.you must be one of those guys that go around telling everybody how wrong they are. sad for you!!!enjoy your fish

well, you used the present tense when talking about feeding the mantises red meat. and the fact that mantis shrimps can tolerate extremely harsh conditions in no way makes it okay for the aquarist to provide anything but perfect conditions for his charges. you talking ONLY about how they can be "thrown straight into uncycled tanks" and the like is going to be read by amateur aquarists who might not have as extensive experience or knowledge as yourself. can't we all try to be conscientious aquarists, if not conscientious people?
