you can try it ive seen people with them just remember they range from 2-12in and can hit like a 45cal but even light reflection can get them to hit

the one you find on rocks usually aren't the best looking. just apale olive greenish.

I have absolutley no idea what species mine is, i have looked over that roys stomopods site and it just did my head in trying to work out which species he is. He is about 4", bright blue with red bits in the joins of his legs and "whackers" and he came out of a live rock delivery from work so its def posible to get nice ones out of live rock. I live in Aus though so you would have different species over there. My boss just sqaushes them too so i got it for free and have had him for abit over a year.

You probally get nicer ones in the live rock then we do being in Australia I just got one out of some LR yesterday and hes a drab brown lucky you and your nice blue and red stomatopod and roys list doesnt have every SP. but its about the best list online

ok i got the sand, fiji pink, water, and 7lbs of fiji premium LR. im just waiting for it to cycle now. talked to the manager about getting a mantis too. he says he gets them in the LR and just kills them. i told him if he can to save me one but w/e, he just wants to sell me one. are they really as reclusive as he says they are??

Going back to that question. It depends on the species some are probably shyer then others. The 2 i have owned both where shy for the first few weeks but once they learn you and the feeding stick = food they will come straight out to get food whenever you come to the tank.

you can in theory get any kind of mantis on LR. it's just more likely than not he wont be a looker.

it depends on the species but the more time you spend around them the more active they should get and they are very intelligent and will eventually reconize you as its feeder and become more interactive

Wrong... Peacock mantis shrimp does not grow larger than 7"
