well they can get up to 5 inches long and are quick growers. a five inch fish in a 29 is not suitable.


........... anyways get a five spot general hands down if you want the most aggersive. many people will tell you convicts and devils (even though it is the individual fish that matters) any fish from the hemichromis family will dominate. Especially the elongatus it will be just right for a 55
 
how is a tank that measures 30" x 12" x 18" not suitable for a 5"fish that is going to be kept by itself? That is plenty large for a 5" IMO. Anyways sorry for derailing :)
 
I'd go with a striped midas male. They are very impressive fish when grown and you don't see a lot of the barred midas at adult size. Nothing beats a big male midas for personality.
