Siphoning big tanks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
haha. i think im just gonna go convert to bare bottom. so i only have to worry cleaning gravel. im probly just gonnna get a big hose for siphoning and use a small vacuum for cleaning some of the crap once in a while.

i use a python to vacuum and have spare mag drive :) on a hose i just drop in while i'm vacuuming, makes it go pretty quick on my 300 gal

ya I use my python for my 220, because I only remove about 110-130gals so I am done in roughly an hour or so. I also do my water changes on a day I am not doing anything so I dont need to rush anything.

yep same here on my 210

I had the same problem. Using the standard Python with the little 2" tube took forever. So I built my own monster gravel vac. Attaching a soda bottle to the end of a python might work, but to get more flow you would need a larger hose (I went with 1.5" sump hose http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/4YY37). I cut the bottom out of a 64 oz gatorade bottle and attached it to the end of a standard python tube. I cover a lot more gravel which saves me tons of time. This may be a little excessive for a 125G, but you could always use a smaller hose, or better yet, just attach a ball valve to regulate the flow.

I use a python but run the end out the door because the suction is a lot stronger that way. I've got a 250 gal, a 150 gal and three 125 gallon tanks for big tanks and it doesn't take any time at all. I've got sand, big filters and powerheads that blow it all into 1 or 2 of the same spots, that makes a big difference. It'd be a pain, I think, to get gravel clean because you'd have to keep shoving the nozzle down into the gravel. Sand is a lot easier.
I hook a hose up to the Fluval FX5 output at the same time and that drains fast (I think like 900 gph). So a water change doesn't take hardly any time at all.

but i need a wider diameter tube so i can cover more gravel cause with a skinnier tube i can only cover one small area at a time. i was thinking of making one out of a 2 liter soda bottle. just cut it in half and attach a big hose to it? will it work?

thanks for the input

A two-litre bottle will be waaaay too big---it's unlikely you'll get the suction you need with something trying to cover such a large surface area (the gravel surface, that is). Mebbe half, a one litre . . . .
