size of a marble motoro

The Motoro is one of the larger rays, it is the marbled motoros that seem to be a little smaller.

T1Karmann, I cannot believe you said that parents do not determine the size of the offspring....I think you were winding me up but if not drop down to the library and look up something called Genetics, then biology and then evolution. That should be a good start.:D

Ray offspring kept in a small tank with low food are likely to stay smaller than ones in a large tank with lots of food. Pollutants such as Nitrate or general poor quality water will also hold a fish back IMO

Your right genetics do pay a part but have you never herd of things skipping a generation

lets take diabetes for a example its not very common for a diabetic to have children with the same condition but very common for their children to get it meaning it has skipped a generation

one of my p14 females now came from my last breeding stock with a male of 13inch disk and a female of 14inch disk the female i have now is close to 18inch

its crazy to think that if both parents are 6.25 tall the children will be the exact same size after all they are not being kept in a tank thats to small for them and I'm fairly sure they will be getting the right food :D

Ok, understood. I should have said it depends on their bloodline and what genetics have passed down the family BUT generally bigger parents often produce big offspring and small parents often produce smaller offsrping.

If you breed shetland ponies then you aint gonna get shire horses popping out every now and again.:D

you are talking about something completely different you are talking about line breeding to keep the animal small

with marble motoro its near impossible to say what size they will get to as we are just getting to F2 now

maybe after a few years when people have continued to breed small marble to small marbles a few generations down the line they may stay small but at this moment in time no one can guarantee you that a marble will stay small

I understand what you are saying but I am not talking about line breeding (other than my joke about the horses)

What I am saying is that fish from smaller families will be most likely small.

If two of the biggest wild monster marbles happened to have bred and their offspring bred in captivity with a male from another large wild then chances are that bloodline will stay large.

I do think that as marbles have a rep for being smaller and there seems to be a "want" or interest in them due to a smaller potential then maybe people will select the smaller ones and yes, then line breeding due to demand will become more common. I dont suppose the hobby is large enough but it would be a shrewd move to breed some rays that stay under 10 inches reliably.....you only have to look at the worrying number of posts that start with "can I keep a Ray in a 80gall....":WHOA:

i understand what you are saying but its not always the case

if you take a monster marble male and breed it with a monster marble female then you may still get small pups as both of the Monster marbles parents may have been small it can also be the other way round

i think it best that you always go on the max size of any fish if marbles have been known to reach 20 inch disk then you should think that the ones you own could get to that size if they don't they don't

if small rays were in such high demand the the scobina breeding would be massive

I have been interested in rays for years but have never knowingly seen a Scobina for sale in any LFS which is where the majority of people buy. If people do not know to look elsewhere for a fish they do not know exists then it could just be a marketing issue that has not got the breeding going.

I will now research Scobina as I may want to try a breeding pair when I build my fish house

i just sold my pair of scobina the male was fully mature and already had pups with the female the male was no bigger than a cig pack and the female was 10 inch disk

Wow, is that normal or exceptional? Do you have any pics as I really cannot think what we are talking about?

Thanks for the link. They are fairly plain but good for the money and if they stay small then they solve a problem for many people. I guess at 12inch max (if that is correct) then they would still need a decent size tank.

I think I may give them a try when I finally get the fish house done (loft conversion is 50% done)
