I have a florida spotted gar 12 in and i have never heard of this problem.
i hope i dont get this problem. I received him from a friend who stupidly put him in a rubber made container for 2 days before giving him to me. it was sad and he looked like he wasnt going to survive. finally after a few days we got him to eat and now he is as good as new. lol i hope this problem never comes my way. always good to learn about possible illnesses.

i used to have a gar but my rtc got tired of eating goldfish so it ate it

great, we can all rest assured now that you have posted your completly useless comment..

to add on to the original question, i had a gar that jumped out and landed on my bedsheet for a while, when i put it back in, the side seemed to have been burnt. it's all black with no pattern. just like to know if it really is burnt, or what happened to it, and if it would recover.

Alright I took a water sample to the lfs. The amonia, nitrates, ph are all perfect. I added half of the salt and upped temp to 82..gonna add the rest of the salt in the morning. And the pleco is going in a 55 gal after its cycled. Anything else I should do?

not too sure abt what you should do, but i think plecos are pretty hardy, and you should get him out of there while the gar is still alive. even if the 55 isn't cycled. the gar is gonna need an upgrade soon though:)

talking about pleco sucking on the fish, i recently notice the little burn mark on my gar too.. thanks for bring this tread up.. should i take the pleco out or will it ending up sucking the living out of my gar?

gettin the 55 hopefully tommorow...couldnt today. But the gar looks better after addin salt and uppin the temp. He ate his first chunk of market shrimp as well. No more feeders for him. His belly has a nice lump in it.

or off of him. plecos are usually a bad combo with gar. i have a had a few work fine, but as a rule of thumb they should not be kept together.

I haven't seen my pleco try it, but he's a common pleco with a taste for meaty food so I wouldn't be surprised. I have a poly too so the pleco is in the growout tank where he can't cause trouble (plus I can powerfeed the growouts and the pleco won't let the excess food go to waste).

like i said...not all plecos will do this, but it's very likely to happen when these two fish are mixed. if these two fish are to be mixed...make sure there is a very close eye on them. when a pleco gets hold of a gar it can often time be fatal.
