PassengerTN--

How's your GT doing? Is he passing dark turds yet?

Kinda crass, but that's what you want to see...

The last thing that a GT with gastrointestinal issues needs, is a high protein diet. I would drop the blood worms from his diet immediately. The parasites that cause Hex, are the same ones that cause HITH in tropical fish, Spironucleus vortens.
You can read more about that in the following thread. http://monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/hith-revisited.650466/

The Epsom salt presoak works well in early stages, but if the parasites become systemic, and they travel into the organs and/or bloodstream, then I believe that you will need metronidazole to kill them off. If the fish is still eating you can feed NLS Hex-Shield pellets, which contain Metronidazole, Epsom Salt, an a mega dose of Garlic. I've personally tested this food on sick fish, and it works.

You could follow that up with a quality deworming agent, such as Levamisole.

Good luck.

Thanks RD. I'll phone up my local LFS today and see if she has any of the Hex Shield.

No prob, glad to help. The good news is your fish is still eating, so it shouldn't be that difficult to get him cleaned out and back on the right course.

Yes totally agree, drop the blood worms right away. Looks like you're already on your way. In my experience aquarium salt works just fine helping the digestive system. Stay away from meaty foods with GT. Also noticed mine can be picky about their diet, meaning they will reject new unfamiliar foods for awhile. They can go 2 weeks with out eating so not to much to stress about. Feeding once a day is perfect imo. I skip days from time to time as well. You have a nice GT there. Congrats

Epsom salt aka Magnesium Sulfate is not actually a salt, and in situations such as this will react with any traces of hex/spiro within the gastrointestinal system, where as aquarium salt will have no effect on those parasites. When dealing with Hexamita aka Spironucleus you don't want to get the two confused.
