Skipping the cycling process?????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It would be faster to just do a fishless cycle because with fish in the tank you are going to have to do water changes to bring the ammonia down, which is the same as lowering the food supply for the bacteria.

Moving the old water into the tank only does one thing, dirties up your new tank. Also, one sponge would not have enough bacteria grown on it (unless there was very little filtration in the old tank, then the concentration of bacteria on the surface areas would be exponentially larger) to support fish.

Also, between the time you took the sponge out and the time you added the fish to the tank the bacteria were probably already gone. From now on you need to do a 50% water change everytime you hit .50ppm ammonia and once you see nitrites you need to add 1 tablespoon of kosher salt per gallon.

I suggest dosing the tank for prime on a daily basis to bind the ammonia from the fish and to improve rates of living fish.

By adding those fish to the tank you have successfully caused yourself quite a bit of work.
