I got a new atf this weekend for my 240 gallon, and he is really skittish more so than any other atf that I have owned. I currently have 5 redhooks that are bigger than the atf that I'm guessing arent making the situation better since they ram into the sides everytime I walk up to the tank. Should I take them out and let the atf go solo? Or should i just give the atf more time to adjust. Its been 5 days now. And any recommendations on how i could catch all the redhooks with the least amount of stress on the atf? I was thinking trying to catch them all at night.

A powerhead usually helps with ATF from being skittish, Also tinfoil barbs seem to help alot aswell.

I have 5 maxi jets pushing out 1200gph each and I have a 2400 gph return pump for my sump. He's still really skittish. I have a batf/fatf w a lot less flow and he is not skittish at all and very confident

It might be because it is new to the tank if it is still like that after a few more weeks try removing the redhooks.

Does it freak out when yours just looking at it? Mine used to be really skittish but now it just freaks out whenever I open the top or do something in the tank.

Sometimes it just depends on the individual fish. A 240 with current sounds like a good setup. The redhooks may be causing him to freak out a little. It could be a matter of time to get used to the surroundings. How's his appetite?

If you were to remove the redhooks I would say don't do it at night. That makes it worse. At night they expect calm and quite if you disturb him he will freak out more. I'd do it in the middle of the day where at least he can see more of what's going on.

Goliath have always scared me, they dont seem to understand their surroundings when compared to other ATF.
Turn your light off for a few days, it might help. Do a water change and grab the hooks while the water level is low.

If he's not freaking out to the point where he's actually hurting himself, I'd just leave the red hooks in with him. My goliath as actually calmed down a good bit once I added silver dollars to the tank. He'll catch up to them in size fairly quickly and should calm down accordingly.

Obviously skittishness varies from fish to fish, but I'd give him more than a week before worrying about it too much.
