Skunks Under the House

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Move the couches to a different location, and see if the smell follows.

A possible explanation that leaps to mind is that the access opening they used was closed during daylight hours, trapping one or more skunks in the crawlspace. With no escape, these animals could have died and begun contributing a slightly different odour to the cocktail of smells you already enjoy.

I would be very cautious about going in there if you think there are still live skunks present. If they feel that they are cornered, their reaction will be predictable.

The couches are big. They literally wouldn't fit anywhere else. I will be cautious.

K krichardson Pepe LePew has not been back. You guys were right about the smell not coming out in the wash. I wore some jeans, from the day I tried flushing them out. I washed them and it wasn't any better as far as smell. I guess I'll have to wear the smell out.

I'm pretty sure the jeans will wear out before the smell. But, maybe not...this is just second-hand residual stink, not the real deal.

So, are you saying that you have gone prospecting under the house again? If so, and if you are certain they are all gone, then a properly sealed access point will solve your problem. Then it's just the residual funk you need to deal with, but at least that won't be getting any worse.

Man....throw those jeans in the trash!

Lmao! I really didn't think it would be that bad. I can throw the jeans out. But what about my now funkdafied couches.. may be time for new couches.
I haven't been under the house. It's been raining for days here. I want to wait until things clear up.

Take the couches outside and give em a good hosing!

I wasn't aware of that. Thank you. Great seeing you pacu mom pacu mom , Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you!

As an aside, this discussion of skunk odor has got me thinking in a slightly different direction. Skunk odor greatly resembles two other smells. In recent years, when we drive on Hwy 199 into Oregon in Spring and Summer, on certain stretches of the road, a powerful skunk smell fills our car (even with the windows closed) The strong skunk smell is not from a skunk, nor is it strong mint. We drove on the road twice this week for medical appts. No strong smell now. ... the "hemp" must be all harvested....

I apologise in advance for the slight derail but......

Being a luddite from the UK, somewhere where we don't have "crawlspaces", or maybe we do, but as in good old states/blighty tradition, we call them different names!!

What is the purpose of a crawlspace, somewhere where.....er, skunks can enter and cause havoc, or any other critter. Plus crawlspaces, as far as I can see from countless other threads are a hindrance when you are setting up a humongously heavy aquariums as the floors always need support.

Can someone explain the advantages of a crawlspace, they must serve a purpose?
