i also used the hammer when i did one of my tanks.. however i figured i wouldnt like it after a while so didnt silicone them down... it was pretty easy to clean out under the tiles...
however i did silicone for the "caves"

make sure the silicon has no anti fungus stuff or that might harm your fish

...Window & Door.
I've read that the BAth and Kitchen have the anti mildew agent but what about the Window and Door?

I think tile is a great idea. Even if you chose to extend the tile up the back of the tank as a background if think would look cool. I agree about sealing it with something.

Ok, too bad this is already pretty much done... Can someone please explain the paranoia about stuff getting stuck under your tiles? WTF is that all about? The worst that could possibly happen is the debris will decompose and generate nitrogen products that will be handled by your bio filter and water changes. I mean there's no harm in siliconing them down, I just don't see it as necessary at all. Cichlid tank owners don't silicone their rocks together to prevent crud from getting between them, so why would you be worried about tiles?

I looked into this kind of bottom for my 600gl tank, and I'm still planning on doing it, but there's no way I'll be gluing the tiles down, or together. I'll put them down and fill the cracks with paving sand, leaving enough extra sand to drift around as the currents take it.

This thread has got me thinking......I seen some "brick-look" tiles in town a few days ago and thought they would look great as the background on my 2 plywood tank sides (back and one other side). If I were to attach these tiles to the 2 sides of my tank, what would be the best material to bond them to the sides?? I will be fiber glassing the plywood first.

if you want a natural look buy a bag of black sand and pour out over the silicone or epoxy whatever you chose and allow that to cure into/onto the adhesive
