slight water param problem

I jsut had a small die off of a few fish. so i checked my water, and had
ph-6
amonia- 0
nitrites-0
nitrates-about 50

i changed about 50-60% of my water, and my ph is still 6 and my nitrates are still pretty high, about 40. how can i correct this. i would think 6.0 ph is pretty low. my tap water has a ph of 7.0, so ive been trying to do a few medium sized water changes in the last few days. Is there a better way to fix the nitrates. Ive read that alot of food and crap in teh gravel can cause a low ph, but i have sand so i dont know if that could have to do with me because my sand is pretty clean
 
do u think this will bring everything back to normal?? about how long should i expect before i see a change??

You did a 50%-60% water change and your nitrates only went down to 40ppm. Then your "clean" water contains a significant amount of nitrates, you are going to either get an RO or a some type of ion exchanger because your source water sucks.
 
Where are you located? Im in florida and tap water here is EXTREMELY hard and is very hand to change the P.H. of it. I don't have an explination of the nitrates tho.
 
my tap water ph is 7, ill check the nitrates of my tap water tomorrow. i gotta go to be3d now thanks for all the help tho
 
ok this is weird, after another smaller water change,
ph-7.4
nitrates- 40
Tap Water
ph-7.0-7.4
nitrates- 5
What the hell is going on here?
